What is the difference between individual, couples, and family therapy?
The easiest explanation is, what is the objective?
-
Individual therapy is typically one person focusing on their own goals and struggles.
-
Couples therapy is made up of a couple (romantic or not) that are experiencing difficulties working together productively. The objective is to strengthen the relationship and understanding of each person. Focus is placed on proper communication techniques and how to function as a team.
-
Family therapy is for the whole family (no age limit when seen as a family) to learn how to work together and support each other in a healthy way.
-
I also offer pre-marital counseling. The focus is to explore any potential issues that could arise in a marriage and set a strong foundation of how to problem solve through future issues as a team. Please note that insurance very rarely covers pre-marital counseling since it is viewed as "preventative".
How long does each therapy session take?
Typically a therapy session will be roughly 50 minutes. This time can vary depending on the need and what is agreed prior to the session.
Why does it take so long to get a call back from therapist?
I cannot speak for everyone but for me I aim to return all calls, emails, text the same day. I am typically in session all day and devote my attention to whom I'm in the room with. I understand that it is difficult to wait when you are ready for things to change but please be patient and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
